NINETEEN

Raife was on his way back with a plate loaded with food. From red Jell-O-looking stuff to purple spaghetti, my small friend did not discriminate when it came to Schoom cuisine.

“Actually, Sara, who you really want to talk to is the brains behind the whole operation in the arena,” I said, motioning to Raife. I bent down on a single knee and wrapped an arm round him. “Raife saved all of us in the arena. If it weren’t for him, we’d be gone.”

“I did?” Raife asked with a mouthful of red Jell-O stuff.

“Oh my, is that right?” Sara asked, beckoning for her camera operator to get a close-up of Raife.

“Well, I guess I helped,” Raife said, nodding along with my support. “I had a bow and a single arrow.”

“A single arrow you used over and over again,” I reminded him.

“I guess I did,” the little guy said with more self-assurance. “You know I took a Death Eater right in the eye with one.”

Slowly, like a father tiptoeing out of the room of his finally sleeping child, I moved out of the camera frame. Lucky for me, Sara was eating up everything he was saying. Raife just needed a push in the right direction as he started motioning with his hand how he had drawn his single arrow in the face of the hydra.

With a contented sigh, I moved through the room in search of Dez. The Schoom Caesar needed to be convinced that the Galactic Government was in fact an ally that could be trusted to come and help secure the second portal.

“You could have taken all the credit for the arena and yet you chose to give it to another,” a familiar voice said from my left. “I wonder what kind of man craves no praise for his work but instead prefers anonymity.”

I looked over and saw the Oracle leaning against a table. She was dressed in black, with a black hood, and a drink in her hand. Although there were people milling around her, she was alone.

“Someone who’s more sure of his purpose with every day that passes,” I told her. “You can communicate, by the way? No need for the Caesar to translate for you? And you had to send the hydra at us? You couldn’t have chosen an ant species, or maybe a big butterfly?”

Although the Oracle’s eyes were milky white from her loss of sight, the older woman’s mind was as sharp as any blade I had ever seen. Her lips twitched at my response. “You know I make all of that up, don’t you?”

“You what?” I asked, getting closer.

“The Games I choose every year, signs, magic—all smoke and mirrors,” the Oracle said, sipping from her glass. “Ahhh, I’m sorry to disappoint you and let you know your favorite bedtime story was all a lie.”

“How did you know I was the Blood Wolf, then?”

“I’m blind, not socially inept.”

“Meaning?”

“I’m one of the few who has regular communication with the outside world.”

“You knew I was a Rowki?”

“I knew of that, your arrival in our city, the Sait and much more,” the Oracle answered.
